What can I do if my spouse/partner has threatened me or abused me?
A person who has been abused, or is in fear of abuse, can file for an Ex Parte Order of Protection. An Order of Protection is a Court order instructing the offending person to stay away from you. An Order of Protection can be requested from your County Court. There is no fee for this. Once requested, the Order of Protection is good for 15 days, or until a hearing can be had on your request. During the hearing, the Judge will ask you the reasons why you want the offending person to stay away from you. If granted after hearing, the offending person must stay away from you. If they do not, call the police- they are violating the law.
